In 1981, our group met for the first time in a home to read together the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson and to sing hymns, the first meeting of what became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Tigard. Soon we began meeting on Wednesday evenings to share healings and experiences brought about by our practice of Christian Science.
By the end of the 1980’s, we were able to purchase property and build the church edifice where we now meet. We are a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, located in Boston, Massachusetts.
Our study and practice of Christian Science is part of a centuries-long unfolding of spirituality in human consciousness that led to, in 1866, a discovery by a New England woman, Mary Baker Eddy, of the universal, underlying spiritual law of God.
“Mrs. Eddy,” as we often call her, overcame limiting circumstances of her human experience with constant receptivity to God’s presence. She discovered that Life is God and is entirely spiritual. Understanding this spiritual reality has practical, harmonizing and healing implications for mankind. Her discovery enabled her to heal in the way that Jesus healed.
